Saturated Canary is a newer stamp company for me and this was my first go at one of their stamps. All of their characters have wild hair and a lot of it. You’ll notice that I used six different colors on the hair alone. Since there is so much hair and detail, this image can handle that many colors. Of course I did not start out with six colors for the hair, I started out with four (E51, E53, E55, E57) but as I began to color I wanted to bring in more red undertones, so I added the E15 and I wanted to add a punch of contrast at the end, which is when the E59 was added.

Step 1: I start by stamping the giraffe in Rich Cocoa Memento Ink. I then select which part of the image I will color first. I usually choose the trickiest part of the image first (this way if I mess up it is not a big deal). Today I will start with the hooves, I have not colored in a few days so beginning with the easiest part will get me back into the swing of things. I always color in small sections, this allows the areas to stay wet and blend easier. This also allows me to not get overwhelmed by more complex images.

Step 7: The Spots

Markers Used: E13, E15, E18

For the spots I did a few things. I worked in small sections again and used some pallet blending. Pallet blending is great for achieving blends in small areas. In order to pallet blend you start with a pallet which can be any nonporous surface. Make a mark with your darker colors on your pallet (I used my clear block) and then use your lighter markers as your “paint brush”. I lay down some of my lighter color in a few spots then swipe through the pallet with that light marker to “pick up” the darker marker color. I then color with the light marker loaded with the darker color. When you want to clean up your pallet use some colorless blender or rubbing alcohol.

The dark markers on the clear block creating my “pallet”

Step 7: Cast Shadows

Markers Used: BV000

I like to use BV markers for cast shadows on Earth tones. The trick to placing a cast shadow is to think about where your light source is coming from and just draw the shadow in with that in mind. Cast shadows do not require blending. I originally started my cast shadows with a BV0000 marker but could not see it, so I moved up to a BV000.

Place Cast Shadows in with BV000, I also added N6 to the hooves for more contrast

Right or wrong, that’s it, those are the steps I did to color my Giraffe. I always go back and tweak things a bit until I am satisfied…sometimes even after I have the card assembled. What’s important is that I had fun coloring my Giraffe and that he makes me smile.

There is a lot of fun Copic News this week!

I am excited to announce that Copic has created a 36pc. 25th Anniversary Set. This set contains 36 of the most popular Copic colors in new black bodies. Not only are the anniversary markers in slimming black but they have both the Supper Brush Nib (my all time favorite) and the new standard fine nib (previously only available for Copic original markers). We have a few sets but they are sure to sell quickly, click here to get yours today.

Also, drum roll please ……. Colleen has a new book out! If you enjoyed her basics coloring guide and nature coloring guides as much as I did you are bouncing in your seat (like I am) about her newest book…PEOPLE!! I can’t wait for this book to hit my doorstep. We have placed our order and are just waiting for it to arrive. You can pre-order your copy from our web-store by clicking here and we will ship it out as soon as it comes in. The Copic Coloring Guide 3: People also contains an image CD so you can print and color along with the examples in the book. I really enjoyed this added bonus in the “Nature” book and I hope you did too! If you missed out on getting Colleen’s other books don’t worry, we have them too!
