Summer Strawberries

Summer Strawberries Card:

Saturated Canary is a newer stamp company for me and this was my first go at one of their stamps.  All of their characters have wild hair and a lot of it.  You’ll notice that I used six different colors on the hair alone.  Since there is so much hair and detail, this image can handle that many colors.  Of course I did not start out with six colors for the hair, I started out with four (E51, E53, E55, E57) but as I began to color I wanted to bring in more red undertones, so I added the E15 and I wanted to add a punch of contrast at the end, which is when the E59 was added.

Mocha, Vodka, Valium Latte… Please

Mocha, Vodka, Valium Latte…Please

Some days make you feel like this.  I usually choose stamps that I can relate to and that make me smile, and this stamp is no exception.  This is a highly expressive stamp by Art Impressions, the stamp is mounted on cling foam and creates a crisp impression.

Supplies:
Stamp: Giraffe Stamp Set by Art Impressions
Paper Used: X-Press It Blending Card
Ink Used: Rich Cocoa Memento Ink
Copic Markers Used:
    Hooves: N1,N4,N6
    Body: Y11, Y21, YR31
    Spots and Face: E13, E15, E18
    Cast Shadow: BV000

Step 1: I start by stamping the giraffe in Rich Cocoa Memento Ink. I then select which part of the image I will color first.  I usually choose the trickiest part of the image first (this way if I mess up it is not a big deal).  Today I will start with the hooves,  I have not colored in a few days so beginning with the easiest part will get me back into the swing of things.  I always color in small sections, this allows the areas to stay wet and blend easier.  This also allows me to not get overwhelmed by more complex images.

Step 2: The Hooves
Markers Used: N1, N4, N6

Flick in N1 from the sides of each hoof.

Flick in N4 from the sides of each hoof. Leave some of the N1 visible.

Blend the seam between N1 and N4 with your N1 Marker.

Add more N4 at the sides of the hooves to improve the contrast. When I was done coloring the entire image I added in some N6 to increase the contrast further.

Step 3: The Head
Markers Used: Y11, Y21, YR31 & E13, E15, E18

Flick in Y11 all over the head.

Step 7: The Spots
Markers Used: E13, E15, E18
For the spots I did a few things.  I worked in small sections again and used some pallet blending.  Pallet blending is great for achieving blends in small areas.  In order to pallet blend you start with a pallet which can be any nonporous surface.  Make a mark with your darker colors on your pallet (I used my clear block) and then use your lighter markers as your “paint brush”. I lay down some of my lighter color in a few spots then swipe through the pallet with that light marker to “pick up” the darker marker color.  I then color with the light marker loaded with the darker color.  When you want to clean up your pallet use some colorless blender or rubbing alcohol.

Lay down some E13

Spots and tail filled in with E13 first then E13 loaded with E18

Add more E18 for contrast

Blend some areas with E15 then add more E18 in areas for contrast

Step 7: Cast Shadows
Markers Used: BV000
I like to use BV markers for cast shadows on Earth tones.  The trick to placing a cast shadow is to think about where your light source is coming from and just draw the shadow in with that in mind.  Cast shadows do not require blending.  I originally started my cast shadows with a BV0000 marker but could not see it, so I moved up to a BV000.

Place Cast Shadows in with BV000, I also added N6 to the hooves for more contrast

Right or wrong, that’s it, those are the steps I did to color my Giraffe.  I always go back and tweak things a bit until I am satisfied…sometimes even after I have the card assembled.  What’s important is that I had fun coloring my Giraffe and that he makes me smile.
